Kinetic Blocks

Pin-based shape displays not only give physical form to digital information but also manipulate objects placed on them. We present techniques that use shape changes to add kinetic ability to static objects. The displays can assemble, disassemble, and reassemble structures using building blocks, and special kinematic blocks translate pin movements into rotation or horizontal motion. This interaction enables the rendering of inaccessible forms and enhances input and output capabilities.
